Jennifer Harman
For today’s poker vids profile we have the first female poker player we have profiled, and a very worthy one at that. Jennifer Harman is one of the most respected players in the game, facing tough problems to come through and become a true poker professional with many an accolade to her name.
The story of Jennifer Harman is an intriguing one to say the least. She stated playing poker at around the age of 8, watching her father play in games around the kitchen table. Jennifer’s father would often allow her to play his hands when he just couldn’t win and the pot was down. Jennifer recalls that she would be able to win him enough back every time to allow him to draw even instead of losing his money. Her young poker days were to be plagued by various and afflicting health problems. She had to have a kidney transplant early on in her life to allow her to carry on going to school and playing the card game she loved, giving her the chance to live from a condition that claimed the life of her mother and sister. In 2004 Harman had another transplant and this prompted her to form the charity CODA (Creating Organ Donation Awareness) http://www.codacharity.org/ to help raise public knowledge of the procedure which saved her life.
Her father didn’t agree with her choice of career when she became a professional poker and they didn’t talk for some time afterwards. After winning a large sum of money playing poker, Jennifer decided to open up her own business and leave the poker scene behind. This was to prove costly as it made her totally broke. She had no choice but to start playing poker once again. Jennifer’s life is a tale of many struggles and her own determination to overcome these difficulties of health and money.
She is in a way a poker prodigy and continues to ride the scene today. She has two WSOP bracelets, making her the only woman to hold tow bracelets for open World Series of Poker events. She has also finished first place in many tournaments and is considered to be one of the best all round poker players ever to play poker. Her tournament winnings are estimated at around $2.5 million. It should be noted here though that for much of her career Jennifer has preferred cash games to tournaments.
Harman is the only woman to be a regular at the “Big Game”, where she usually plays four nights a week. It is a high stakes game played at the Bellagio casino, Las Vegas - not for the feint-hearted nor inexperienced!
Here she is playing a great hand of poker:-
